For landscape painter Piera Pugliese, the Humber River has been a familiar subject for many years. Her new series, Nature and the City, documents the changes taking place as the Eglinton LRT construction crosses the river. Working from photographs and plein air studies, she develops these observations into larger oil paintings that consider the relationship between a growing city and the natural landscape it occupies. Her work acknowledges the necessity of public transit while drawing attention to the transformation taking place around it. Trees, water, construction and infrastructure exist together within a landscape in transition, prompting a closer look at what changes, what remains, and how nature persists and adapts within the city.
