Biography
Piera Pugliese is a Toronto-based landscape painter whose work explores the complex and often uneasy relationship between nature and the city. She works primarily in oil, beginning with plein air painting and photography and developing these observations into larger studio paintings.
Having lived near the Humber River for many years, Pugliese has watched the landscape change as Toronto grows. Her current work documents the construction of the Eglinton LRT as it crosses the Humber, reflecting on both the necessity of urban development and the resilience of the natural world.
Pugliese graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1992. Her work has been exhibited widely and has received awards including the 2024 McMichael En Plein Air Kleinburg Village Prize adjudicated by Sarah Milroy, Chief Curator. Presently exhibiting in the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Edith Dumont, a purchase award painting.
